I studied architecture at Cambridge University, and worked for an architectural practice based in the same city.  In between, I spent two years employed by an Herefordshire company that specialises in the repair and conservation of historic buildings, where I was involved in projects for English Heritage and the National Trust.  Both of these jobs gave me a good grounding in the use and detailing of traditional materials and techniques, including oak framing, lime mortars and renders, as well as period joinery and glazing.

Having enjoyed combining the design skills with a hands on knowledge of the construction processes, I completed a two year course in cabinet making.  During this time I designed and started building a traditionally jointed oak framed building (see pictures here) in woodland that I jointly own with a friend, using timber and other materials sourced from the site and as locally as possible.  This self-built oak-framed barn is now available to rent as a beautiful, peaceful holiday home (photograph below), a unique place from which to explore Herefordshire and Shropshire. Visit our website at www.cruckbarn.co.uk for more details.

Over the last 15 years I have worked on a diverse range of domestic projects, helping clients bring their ideas to life. I have enjoyed being part of the self-build movement, and grateful for my long established relationship with T.J. Crump Oakwrights, who represent one of the leading and most forward thinking companies in the oak-framing industry.
